A Message from the President
2013 A Year of Change
The year 2013 was a year of change for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) and the health insurance industry. With the launch of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) the health insurance industry embarked on the most sweeping reform our industry has ever seen. We have worked diligently to implement ACA throughout our business and provide our members and the people of New Mexico with many choices and options for their health care needs.
In February, BCBSNM learned it was selected as a Managed Care Organization for the state’s new Medicaid program, Centennial Care. To ensure that we meet the needs of the state and our Centennial Care members, we began an intense implementation initiative and expansion of our workforce.
In November, BCBSNM announced its entry into a transaction to purchase Lovelace Health Plan’s Medicare and Commercial lines of business. In 2014, BCBSNM anticipates welcoming more than 110,000 members into the BCBSNM family. We will be working hard to ensure a smooth transition for our new members in New Mexico.
Through all these changes, what hasn’t changed is Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico’s dedication and commitment to the people and the communities it serves.
We are proud of the positive influence our company has on New Mexico. By supporting innovative programs and organizations, BCBSNM helps to impact the health and wellness of not only our members, but all New Mexicans. The effect can be seen through the work of our Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® partners, such as Abrazos Family Support Services in Bernalillo, El Centro Family Health in Española, AVANCE in Las Cruces, Futures for Children, and Special Olympics of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
As the President of BCBSNM, I am inspired daily by our employees who work hard assisting our members, but also find the time and passion to give back to New Mexico’s communities. Whether they are collecting school supplies for needy elementary students, building a playground for a rural community, donating items for members of the armed forces, or collecting gifts for senior citizens, the employees of BCBSNM give from their hearts on an on-going basis.
Our outreach teams traveled the state to be a part of community health fairs, provided health screenings at events, and participated in programs that have a significant impact on the people and communities of New Mexico.
The BCBSNM Care Van® works with health providers throughout New Mexico to immunize children, provide flu shots, and perform medical screenings for the uninsured. If there is a need, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico looks for ways to address it.
We are your family, your friends, and your neighbors. We are proud to be a part of New Mexico. Our business may be changing, but we are not changing our commitment to you, our members, or the people of New Mexico. I invite you to take a few minutes to read about our dedication to this state and how we are enhancing the lives of our fellow New Mexicans.
