The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) Care Van program has been in operation for eight years. The mission of the program is to help improve health care access and health outcomes for all New Mexicans. Over the years, the Care Van has partnered with providers who administer health screenings and immunizations to children and adults who might not otherwise receive these critical medical services. The Care Van is equipped with wireless service and laptops so nurses can immediately update shot records in the New Mexico Immunization Information System. This service is invaluable to parents who may not have a regular medical provider, and gives parents information about up-to-date shot records.
In 2013, more than 2,000 immunizations were provided in the van. The Care Van travels throughout New Mexico to health fairs and community events and partners with providers to offer basic screenings for blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, hearing, and asthma. In 2013, approximately 5,000 health screenings were provided in the Care Van.
New immunization partnership
In the fall of 2013, BCBSNM and Walgreens began a partnership to administer flu shots through the Care Van program. This partnership allowed flu shots to be given at different locations throughout New Mexico to all New Mexicans. We will continue to partner with Walgreens in 2014 to ensure all New Mexicans have their flu shots.
