September rains brought historic flooding to New Mexico in 2013. Dozens of towns were underwater and hundreds of New Mexicans were forced to evacuate their homes. Governor Susana Martinez issued a state of emergency, after many areas of the state received more moisture in the month of September than they received the whole year.
To help support the hardest hit communities, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico (BCBSNM) donated $5,000 to the Salvation Army. This donation was used to purchase construction-grade roof tarps so that people could cover their homes to protect them from the continuing rains. BCBSNM believes it must help support fellow New Mexicans during such critical times.
